Toronto, Ontario — Global Car Recycling Day, a day to raise awareness about the importance of responsible car recycling, is being held on Friday June 20, 2025.
The annual event was started by U.K.-based auto-recycling company CarTakeBack in 2023. It was meant to help start conversations in homes, businesses and government organisations worldwide about the importance of car recycling.
While approximately 40 million cars reach the end of their life globally each year, only around 27 million of those cars will be recycled. The annual event is meant to improve government regulations across the world to protect the environment from the impact of end-of-life vehicles. The organization calls for responsible recycling of reusable parts, depollution of any harmful chemicals or toxins, as well as the separation and innovative processing of materials after the vehicle is crushed and shredded.
More than that, the company encourages car owners and OEMs to carefully think about recycling from the beginning of a vehicle’s life. It emphasizes that to make an impact, car manufacturers should be thinking about a circular economy of car parts– designing parts with recyclability in mind. The organization also calls on vehicle owners to research where their car could end up at the end of its life and, if there’s no eco-conscious option available, to put pressure on both their manufacturer and government environment department.
To get involved, share support or raise awareness, people may use the hashtag #GlobalCarRecyclingDay on any social media platform.
